Father Timothy Drake, pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Clintwood, and Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo stand by the church sign following the 50th anniversary of the church May 22. Originally built and staffed by the Glenmary Home Missioners in 1961, St. Joseph’s became part of the Diocese of Richmond in 1974 when diocesan boundaries were realigned with establishment of the Diocese of Arlington. Clintwood is located in Dickenson County near the Kentucky border and Breaks Interstate Park, about four hours west of Roanoke. There are approximately 20 registered households in the parish. St. Joseph’s is part of the Trinity Cluster of Southwest Virginia which also includes the Catholic communities of Sacred Heart, Big Stone Gap; St. Anthony’s, Norton, and Holy Spirit, Jonesville. Father Drake is pastor of all four communities. (PHOTO BY DEACON CHRIS HESS)
